It’s the beginning of a new year, and with it comes the tradition of setting goals. In past years, I used to set goals that were completely unrealistic-thinking that the more ambitious they were, the closer I’d get to becoming my “best self.” But over time, I realized that these unattainable goals weren’t helping me focus on what truly mattered. Instead, I was striving to meet expectations that weren’t even my own.

This year, I’ve decided to approach goal setting differently. A conversation with my mom really shifted my perspective. We talked about the importance of carving out time for ourselves without the guilt that so often comes with it. If you’re a mom, you know exactly what I’m talking about- that constant tug of guilt when you prioritize yourself for even a moment.

During our chat, my mom brought up something she’d heard: when you’re on an airplane, the flight attendants always tell you to put on your oxygen mask first before helping others. Why? Because you can’t help anyone else if you’re not okay yourself. That analogy hit home for me.

As moms, we spend so much of our energy caring for our families that we often neglect our own mental and physical health. But the truth is, if we’re not taking care of ourselves, we can’t give our best to the people who matter most.

So, this year, my goals are all about self-care-not in a selfish way, but in a way that will help me be a better mom, partner, and person. I’m challenging myself to set aside at least one hour a day just for me. Whether it’s all at once or spread out over the day, that hour will be dedicated to doing something that nurtures my mind, body, or soul.

I want to challenge you to do the same. Find one hour in your day-just one- to focus on yourself. It could be reading a book, going for a walk, journaling, meditating, or anything that brings you joy and renewal. I bet you’ll notice a huge difference, not only in how you feel but also in how you show up for your family.

Let me know in the comments if you decide to take on this challenge. I’d love to hear how it works for you and what self-care looks like in your life. Here’s to a year of realistic goals and a healthier, happier you!
